The geoecosystem area of the rivers Mura and Drava is protected as a regional park as the largest protected area of its kind in Croatia. Geomorphological and hydromorphological features of Mura and Drava rivers stand out as one of the last untouched rivers in Europe, with breathtaking river relief, diverse plant and animal species, and a rich cultural and traditional heritage. Although protected, river beds are often being changed by different projects, which alter the appearance of space and threaten all those conditions and characteristics that are unique for Mura and Drava rivers. Settlements within and around the park are an integral part of this category, and it is necessary to ensure protection and encourange their sustainable development in order to stop the trend of destruction of this national and European heritage.
