Abstract

After the dismantling of the former municipality of Donji Miholjac in 1993, the district is nowadays consisted of four municipalities including the town of Donji Miholjac. The differentiation of the social and economical development throughout history had led to the higher growth of the region at the beginning of the 20th century. The adverse land and environment had been an obstruction to the process of populating the region, yet by that point its significance was reduced and thus the process could be carried out. In the post-Second World War period the district of Donji Miholjac has become a marginal region due to the new social circumstances. Isolated from almost every relevant socio-economic changes and movements, the district faced its setback. The geographical isolation of the region implied special developmental issues, including demographical ones in the past hundred years. Therefore, notwithstanding the research about its peripherality, the foci of this thesis are primarily the development and growth in population and bio-dynamic features of its demographically aged population. As the district is characterized by depopulation in specific circumstances from 1953 onwards, the thesis renders the intensity of the mutual conditioning and interconnectedness of the peripheral geographical position, as well as the population growth and development in the district of Donji Miholjac.
