Karlovac Conuty is, after the City of Zagreb, the stongest tourist destination in continental Croatia in the number of overnight stays and income from tourism. Thanks to its geographical position and natural resources base this area has great potential for tourism development. Given that the Karlovac County has not many great cities, and to have expressed relief, cultural and historical characteristics, its tourist development should be based on the development of rural tourism, which should become a component of development. These features determine the possibilities of diferent types of tourism, from rural to urban. Some of the most important are: winter, hunting and cultural tourism. The specificity of Karlovac County is the development of transit tourism, thanks to the D1 road, that connects the continental Croatia with Dalmatia. This work should try to show the importance of developing rural tourism in Karlovac County, with special attention on the road direction D1.
