Abstract

Settlements are places where people live and work in an area, and their number and size are variables that change in accordance with the natural geographical, economic, political and historical conditions over time. Together they form a functionally connected network within which each settlement has a certain place in the hierarchy, with regards to the functions it has. Stronger processes of urbanization emerged in the area of Varazdin County in late 1950s. The population left agriculture and was employed in industry. Abandoning the previous place of living and moving to the cities had a double effect - the old, inactive population stayed in the rural areas and the pressure on work centres became great. Thus, great changes started occurring - small settlements became even smaller and big became even bigger. Their significance and role also changes, which resulted in an extremely polarized development of the entire area.
