The paper analyses socioeconomic city region of Varaždin. With the data gathered from Census 2001 socioeconomic city region is defined on territorial unit of settlement by three variables: percentage of agriculturally oriented population, percentage of employed population in active population and the most important one, percentage of employed migrants that are on daily basis traveling to work to the city of Varaždin. After defining limits of city region, 88 settlements are found in the region, with only one urban settlement (Varaždin) and all of the others less urbanized or rural. Analyses is also made in concentration of population in relation to central city, surrounding and whole agglomeration and the conclusion is that although the surrounding of the agglomeration has more population than central city, that is not strictly a sign of development of the city region, but in some, a result of long tradition of agricultural settlement of the area of north Croatia. In the last twenty years there is a decline in number of inhabitants in the city region, but in the same time, it has, especially settlments nearer to the Varaždin, socioeconomically developed, which can be seen in physical, as well as, functional aspect.
