Abstract

In the process of working on this thesis I conducted a demographic study of contemporary characteristics of the Town of Krk. Most of the Croatian territory is characterized by negative demographic trends, but the Town of Krk represents one of the few insular administrative-territorial units experiencing major population increases. In spite of the fact that the Town of Krk is experiencing a rapid rate of immigration, the population’s age structure is not favorable. The proportion of elderly population (>60 years) comprises 26% of the town’s population, although population ageing has not yet reached critical levels as it is the case on other Adriatic islands. The aim of this thesis is to determine the factors of the current demographic situation, as well as to explain the spatial distribution of the town and changes in population, based on the analysis of the current situations in the Town of Krk (i.e. the analysis of spatial, demographic and economic indicators of development and the centrality level of the town).
