Abstract

The ancient Maya civilization has evolved through three major periods: the preclassic, classic and postclassic. Mayan cities vary depending on the associated development period, but certain basic features stay the same. It is problematic to place them within the universal definition of town or city because of specific cultural and developmental course of Maya civilization, therefore is necessary to study its urbanism in terms of space and time in which it occurred. Although religion was a steady foundation of their culture and society, it is the availability of various resources and control over trade routes, together with military function, that made distinction between the real urban center and regular ceremonial center.
