Abstract

In this thesis focus is on the area of Western Slavonia in its most acceptable limits. To understand the processes associated with the War in Croatia (Patriotic War) it is crucial to understand the historical and demographic processes that took place in this region, especially on the eve of the war. Due to the complexity of space and turbulent history of Western Slavonia this thesis shows a broad overview of the history of the region from the earliest times to the present day. Analyzing historical events and their connection to the demographic processes before, during and after the war this thesis gives the entire picture of this region. Negative demographic processes in this area began before the war and the war itself accelerated it further. The ethnic composition was changed in favor of the majority of the people (Croats), who had accounted for the majority in all historical periods. Historical processes, destruction in the war and the consequences of privatization and transformation are the main factors of the actual difficult situation of Western Slavonia.
