Abstract

The goal of this paper is to represent and explain the need for the project "Multipurpose canal Danube-Sava”. This project includes a transport and water management facilities that will consolidate three basic functions: irrigation, drainage and navigation, and, in accordance with international agreements will be a Vb class of waterway. This paper is focused on presenting the data regarding basic characteristics of the canal, the current state and the future of Vukovar port, the necessary amount of work, as well as the stages of the project that have been achieved. The spatial plan envisages the construction of canal in four phases, each of which represents a hydro engineering unit that can function independently to upgrade to the next phase. The future multi-purpose Danube-Sava Canal, as a basis of the combined waterway-railway traffic corridor of the Danube-Adriatic region, has been long time ago recognized in Croatia as a conductor of the traffic potential between Central Europe and the Mediterranean. The final part of the paper analyzes the river traffic in Croatia, as well as potential advantages and disadvantages of the future canal, on which it argues that this project is needed to Croatia.
