Rural areas in the Republic of Croatia cover about 90% of the territory and have little less than 50% of its residents. Despite the fact that the agricultural population accounts for only about 5% of the total population in Croatia, agriculture is very important. Due to the natural and cultural diversity of rural areas, many tourist attractions and preserved environment, the Republic of Croatia has preconditions for the development of agrotourism. This complex research was based on surveys and interviews with holders of rural tourist family farms and shows great potential for agrotourism development in Littoral Croatia. Agrotourism is in this area at an early stage of development and has a small share in the total tourist traffic. However, clear differences between some parts of the region were seen. Istria is a good example of agritourism development in the function of tourist season extension by increasing accommodations and in the function of gradual revitalization of rural areas by raising the living standards of local agricultural population. Other parts of the region should also go in this direction. Greater engagement of the holders of agrotourism, as well as greater involvement of the authorities in bringing development measures, which can also serve the development model presented in this paper, is sure to lead agrotourism to becoming one of the core elements of the development that will generate the necessary changes in the rural area.
