Abstract

Protected areas appear in almost all communities from the earliest history. Today, these are areas that are managed with the goal of permanent preservation of the nature, ecosystems and associated cultural values. In addition to the preservation and protection, one of the fundamental functions is tourism and recreation. In order to avoid negative consequences, and as efficiently as possible take advantage of the benefits that tourism brings, it is necessary to develop tourism in line with sustainable development. In Croatia, Lika-Senj is the County with the highest proportion of protected areas with a total surface. In the county is the most visited national park in Croatia, Plitvice Lakes, Northern Velebit National Park and Nature Park Velebit.
