Abstract

This thesis researches the municipality of Cetingrad area, which is a representative example of a border area, and it is marked by negative demographic indexes and trends, as most such areas in Croatia. The demographic analysis refers to the period from 1971. until today where all the negative indexes have definitely been confirmed and thus herein we can find depopulation, obsolescence and extinction of population. The afore-mentioned processes lead to demographic substitution of population which pertains to the change of the population's nation structure, and that is the backbone of this thesis. It is important to point out that the Croatian War of Independence is one of the most important destabilizing factors of demographic growth, and beside the distinct decrease in population, it represents the milestone in the nation structure of the two most numerous national minorities. This is why Serbs today are almost extinct, while the Bosniaks are substituting the border areas and it is therefore expected that the importance of migrations in the future will be increased because of the border situation with Bosnia and Herzegovina.
