Abstract

The Ogulin cave sponge Eunapius subterraneus, Sket & Velikonja, 1984 (Porifera, Spongillidae), is only known stygobiotic sponge in the world. It is found in a small region near the town of Ogulin and in a sump 1392 meters below ground in the Lukina jama – Trojama cave system on Mt. Velebit. Two subspecies were described: E. s. subterraneus and E. s. mollisparspanis. The later is known from a single cave (Rudnica VI). We used 18S rRNA and ITS2 molecular markers to clarify the phylogenetic positions of E. s. mollisparspanis and a disjunct population from Lukina jama - Trojama cave system. Furthermore, to infer the overall phylogeographic structure and alelle diversity of this endangered species we amplified the intron region of ATPS β gene as a molecular marker on 93 specimens sampled throughout the entire range. The results don’t support an independent taxonomical position of Rudnica VI population but the population from Lukina jama – Trojama is clearly separated form the others.
