Abstract

This research has been conducted with the objective of analyzing both ecological and relief characteristics of vineyards in Croatia. The importanceof vinesin temperate regionswith favorable climatic conditions, come from its biological abilityto grow successfully on sloping terrain and nutrient-poor, rocky soils. The analysis was done in GIS environment. By using a digital elevation model, I calculated relevant relief elements and also determined landform categories. With help of a method based on the total thermal energy through the year, Amerine and Winkler(1944) divided five vine-growing regions, using only days with temperatures higher than 10 °C. In addition to high temperature, the development of grapevine depends also on elevation, total amount of precipitation, minimum temperature, exposure and relief position. Based on the analysis results, a predictive map of areas favorable for growing grapevine in Croatia was made.
