Abstract

Leptodirus hochenwartii Schmidt, 1832 (Coleoptera, Leiodidae), is first recognized and described cave animal which is considered rare and vulnerable and is included in the EU Habitat Directive (Natura 2000). It is highly specialized cave beetle and the only species within the genus Leptodirus. This species presently includes six subspecies, four of which are found in Croatia. In this graduation thesis new distributional records for this species in Croatia are presented, the morphological variability of the subspecies is estimated and the literature data concerning this species are summarized. Moreover, validity of species name and recent taxonomy are discussed. It is determined that Leptodirus hochenwartii inhabits 55 speleological objects in Croatia. Morphological characters of the subspecies show variability and require further morphological, molecular and phylogenetic studies.
