The otter (Lutra lutra L.) is a medium sized mammal from the family Mustelidae. Its' life-style is connected to freshwater habitats. It has a role of a top predator in the food chain. One of the main factors that determine whether habitat is suitable for an otter is availability of the prey. The aim of this study was to investigate the preference and diversity of prey types in otter diet in different habitats. The main method was the analysis of otter spraints. Studied area was 10000 km2 of the UTM field in central Croatia. Spraints were collected from five different habitats: streams, rivers, channels, fish ponds, lakes. Research was conducted during spring and early summer. 76 samples were analyzed. The results show that fish is the main prey type in the otter diet and amphibians and crayfishes have secondary importance. The importance of fish in the diet declines from the lakes to rivers, channels and streams and amphibians and crayfishes negatively correlate. Results indicate that the abundance of the prey in the studied habitats is sufficient for otters' needs, but it's not possible to make conclusions about species diversity of the habitats.
