Abstract

Nanoparticles of silver, due to its antimicrobial properties, are increasingly used in consumer products (deodorants, perfumes, clothes and shoes, bandages and in cleaning solutions and sprays) as well as in various industries. So far, phyto-, cyto-and genotoxic effects of silver nanoparticles to the individual plant and animal organisms were observed. This paper investigated the toxic effect of silver nano particles (in the concentration range of 5-200 mg L-1) in tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum L.). Plants were harvested and analyzed after 7 days. Chlorophylls and carotenoid contents, certain indicators of oxidative stress and antioxidant enzyme activities were measured. Silver nanoparticles, at higher concentrations, significantly increased the contents of photosynthetic pigments. Also, an increase of proline and decrease in protein content was noticed. At higher concentrations, silver nanoparticles increased oxidative damage to membrane lipids. An increased activity of the enzyme superoxide dismutase has been noticed under higher nano silver treatments, while the induction of glutathione reductase was caused by lower nano silver concentrations. The activity of ascorbate peroxidase was increased at all treatments. The results of the study indicate that silver nano particles cause oxidative stress in N. tabacum leaves, but they also show the efficiency of antioxidative defense system of the tobacco within the range of nano silver concentrations used in the work.
