Abstract

The genus Knautia L. belongs to the family Dipsacaceae which is represented by 18 species in Croatian flora, of which nine are endemic for the West Dinaric area: Knautia adriatica Ehrend., K. clementii (Beck) Ehrend., K. dalmatica Beck, K. illyrica Beck, K. pectinata Ehrend., K. sarajevensis (Beck) Szabó, K. travnicensis (Beck) Szabó, K. velebitica Szabó and K. visianii Szabó. Based on literature data, field surveys and recent herbarium material, taxonomic and herbarium revision of endemic species in Croatia have been done. For herbarium revision were used herbarium collections CNHM, IB, NHMR, W, WU, ZA, ZAHO and herbarium of the Faculty of Agriculture in Zagreb. Since the taxonomy and distribution of endemic species of the genus Knautia in Croatia are poorly understood, the aim was to describe the morphological and ecological characteristics for differentiation among species, so as to make the current distribution maps and a determination key. Herbarium revision has not confirmed the presence of species K. clementii (Beck) Ehrend., K. sarajevensis (Beck) Szabó andi K. visianii Szabó in Croatian flora. The rarest species are Knautia adriatica Ehrend., K. dalmatica Beck and K. velebitica Szabó that are known only on a few locations.
