Abstract

Due to its drinking water reservoirs and dense population the River Sava basin represents the area of economic and environmental interest. Establishing a system for scientifically based protection, monitoring and risk assessment, a state of the art approach called the Effects Directed Analysis (EDA) was applied in this study. EDA combines results of the advanced chemical analysis and bioassays to identify the most critical categories of pollutants. In order to make assessment of estrogenic potential of the surface and sediment samples from the Sava River, the Yeast Estrogen Screen (YES) was used due to its simplicity, sensitivity and reliability. The test organism was a strain of genetically modified yeast, Saccharomyces cerevisiae, which expresses enzyme activity of β-galactosidase when induced by estrogens. Results indicated moderately elevated pollution by xenoestrogens downstream from Zagreb, Sisak and Jasenovac. As expected, results obtained by testing the primary effluent samples from the Zagreb city sewage treatment plant revealed high content of xenoestrogens, justifying an advanced waste water treatment of highly polluted waste waters of the Zagreb city.
