Abstract

Croatian part of Baranja is an integral part of the eastern Croatian, the region which highlights fromthe mid-1990s a marked retardation inthe regional development of the country. Because of organization of within the Osijek-Baranja County, which under the influence of developed macro-regional centers recorded a relatively favorable development trends, recent development problems Baranja are relatively less known. This suggests the need for a more detailed examination of existing problems and possibilities of regional development of the area in terms of new development, occurred by Croatian joining the European Union. In the paper it was explored contemporary developmental characteristics of Baranja, with emphasis on the interaction between population, its functions and structure, and spatial-developmental effects. In so doing are applied corresponding geographic oriented isciplinary methods and techniques. After the research, it was concluded that sustainable development and spatial-functional organization can be achieved through implementation of measures and instruments that will raise the profitability and structureof the economy, demographic stabilize area and preserve the area's natural and cultural heritage throughout the regionand in that way enable territorial cohesion.
