Abstract

The aim of this study is introducing basic concepts of Physics into the high school curriculum and explain their application in seismology. The first part of the study focuses on transmission of mechanical waves on a wire – a user friendly analogy for familiarizing students with a concept of transmission of seismic waves in the Earth. The second part introduces notions of refraction, diffraction and reflection that are used in exploration of Earth’s interior. Finally, the third part of the study focuses on earthquakes through elaboration of sources of seismic waves and notions of frequency and acceleration as main causes of earthquake related damage. Attached are two samples of group exercises aimed at testing students’ comprehension of earthquake causes and ways of measurement followed by lecture plan for two classes focusing on earthquake threat and risks.
