Abstract

Imazalil is a fungicide that is widely used in agriculture to control fungi on fruits, vegetables and ornamentals. It is also used in treatment of seeds after harvest and to prevent deterioration of citrus fruits and bananas during storage. The aim of this research was to determine the genotoxic effects of this pesticide in tissues of some organs (spleen, lymph nodes, thymus and blood) in Swiss mice. The plan of experiment was consistent with written standard OECD 407. The animals were classified in two groups (control and treated, in each group by 5 male and 5 female animals). Experimental animals were exposed to the NOAEL dose of the pesticide Imazalil (10 mg / kg) which was daily administered orally for 28 days, after which we made alkaline comet assay performed on cells of the blood, lymph nodes, spleen and thymus, and counting of micronuclei in peripheral blood. Imazalil induced significant increase in the frequency of micronuclei in both sexes. We found increased values of comet tail length in the treated group of animals in cells of four examined organs in relation to the control group. The significant increase in the value of tail length in blood cells, spleen, thymus and lymph nodes indicates a stronger genotoxic effect of Imazalil in the female than in male mice.
