Abstract

In this thesis Doppler and sub-Doppler cooling mechanisms were studied. Time of flight technique that requires very fast and precise laser and magnetic field control was developed and implemented. Temperature dependence on the intensity and frequency of the cooling laser is observed. The measured values showed a good agreement with the theoretical model for sub-Doppler cooling. The lowest temperature we measured was T = 21.95μK. Center of mass movement due to the radiation pressure force from the pushing laser was measured in dependence of the laser frequency. A new method for measuring light shift was tested. It was concluded that more work on the experimental setup is needed, due to the very big sensitivity on many factors when dealing with such low temperatures and high resolution.
