Abstract

N-glycans are carbohydrate parts of glycoproteins that play very important and sometimes even essential biological roles in an organism. In various diseases (tumors, congenital disorders of glycosylation, inflamation) and conditions (alcoholism), glycan structures can be changed, which can lead to functional changes of glycoproteins. Diagnostic potential of glycan structures is very high, but, in order to provide the use of glycans as biomarkers, it is necessary to examine if these changes occur in a healthy individual during normal phisiological conditions. Stability of human plasma N-glycome was examined by high performance liquid chromatography in 12 healthy individuals (6 males and 6 females). Results obtained in this research show very high N-glycome stability during a short period of time, which gives a firm basis for future research aiming to use glycans in diagnostics.
