Abstract

In this work the effect of different light conditions on growth and photosynthesis in duckweed (Lemna minor L.) was studied. Plants were grown in vitro under two light intensities (40 and 80 μmol photons m-2 s-1) of different lamp types. Plants were exposed to a standard fluorescent (Cool White) lamp and GroLux lamp with higher emissions in red and blue part of the spectrum. Growth of duckweed plants was somewhat better in higher intensity conditions while no difference in growth was noted under different types of lamps. Pigment content was generally higher at lower intensities of cool white light but the difference was not statistically significant. Higher light intensity (80 μmol photons m-2 s-1) reduced the optimal yield of photosystem II especially in plants exposed to red light of GroLux lamps. Efficiency of photosystem II under different lighting conditions was not significantly different. Differences in photochemical quenching under different lighting conditions were also nonsignificant, although somewhat higher values of photochemical quenching were noticed in plants exposed to Cool White lamps. On the other hand, higher values of nonphotochemical quenching were observed in plants exposed to red GroLux lamp. In conclusion, obtained esults show no significant difference in growth and photosynthesis between plants grown under fluorescent light with higher red and blue content in comparison to cool white light, nor between two applied light intensities.
