Marine life of the Lastovo Islands Nature Park is poorly known. Preliminary investigations point to its great habitat diversity with various living communities. During September and October of 2007 and June of 2008, sponge samples were collected on 14 stations inside the Park, using autonomous diving apparatus. Total of 71 species of sponges were noted (69 species from Class Demospongiae, one from Class Hexactinellida and one from Class Calcarea), living inside 6 shallow benthic communities: the biocenosis of infralittoral algae, the biocenosis of seagrass Posidonia oceanica, the biocenosis of muddy sands of protected coasts, the coralligenous biocenosis, the biocenosis semi-dark caves and the biocenosis of caves and passages in total darkness. On some stations only one type of community was recorded and on some stations two or more types were recorded. The biggest number of sponge species – more then 30 – were recorded in community of semi-dark caves and the smallest number of sponge species was recorded on the station on which community of muddy sands of protected coasts came together with degraded community of Posidonia oceanica meadow. Species Crambe crambe was recorded on the most of the stations (12 out of 14). Species Cliona celata was recorded on 11 stations, while Cliona schmidti, Agelas oroides, Petrosia ficiformis and Spirastrella cunctatrix were recorded on 10 stations. Stations were statistically compared based on the presence and absence of sponge species on each station. Results showed grouping of stations depending on the prevailing biocenosis/biocenoses on them.
