Abstract

In the present study the effects of thallium(I) acetate on the root meristem cells of Allium cepa and Vicia faba were examined. The analysis of mitotic activity as well as the type and frequency of chromosomal and mitotic aberrations were done after 24h and 72h treatment period, as well as after 72h recovery period. The result showed that thallium inhibited the root growth as well as mitotic activity in the meristematic cells of both species. Thallium treatment induced multipolar anaphases, bridges, laggards, stickiness and micronucleus formation which were also observed after 72h recovery period. Although both test system were used for genotoxicity assessment, Allium cepa was shown to be more sensitive plant model organism than Vicia faba.
