Abstract

Using micronucleus test we investigated the possible antidiabetic effects of epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) and flavonoids derived from propolis (quercetin, naringin, naringenin and chrysin) in diabetic mice. Type 1 diabetes was induced in mice by injection of alloxan in dose of 75 mg/kg iv. Two days after injection the level of blood glucose was representatly increased compared to healty mice group without alloxan treatment. With daily intake of EGCG and flavonoids in dose of 50 mg/kg during 7 days the general status of diabetic animals was improved. Treatment of mice with EGCG/flavonoids in cases of early diabetes increased the number of micronuclei in peripheral blood reticulocytes compared to diabetic animals without treatment. Number of micronuclei in mice treated with naringenin, quercetin in later diabetes was decreased in relation to nontreated diabetic animals, while treatment of mice with EGCG slightly increased the number of micronucleus. Research of dose-dependent effect, as well as antioxidative enzymes, are contributing better understanding of flavonoid and EGCG efficiency in reducing outcomes of diabetes. Some of the results show promising antidiabetic effect of flavonoids/EGCG.
