Toll-like receptors (TLRs) recognize pathogen-associated molecular patterns and enable innate immune responses. They are also expressed on tumour cells from a wide variety of tissues, suggesting that TLR activation may be an important event in tumour cell immune evasion. The aim of this study was to determine whether TLR9 expression is associated with disease manifestation in lung and hypophyseal tumours. Gene TLR9 expression was evaluated by real-time quantitative RT-PCR. Total mRNA from 45 hypophyseal tumour tissue specimen, 20 lung tumour and 20 normal lung tissue specimen was isolated, purified and retrotranscribed. cDNA was analysed measuring TLR9 relative expression using TaqMan probe technology. Results of the analysis of hypophyseal tumor tissue samples showed the presence of different levels of TLR9 gene expression: ranging from very high in 2 samples (4,4%) to distinctively low in 9 samples (20%). Results of the analysis of 20 lung tumor tissue samples and associated healthy tissues showed higher expression of TLR9 gene in 8 (40%) tumor tissues, in 8 samples (40%) the expression was decreased and in 4 samples (20%) it was unchanged, compared to healthy tissues.
