Abstract

Due to the geomorphologic characteristics of the Eastern Adriatic coast and the Holocene sea transgression, there are numerous submarine pits, caves, half-caves and passages in Croatia. The research of the marine pit near the Island of Iški Mrtovnjak covered a period of three years. The pit is bottle shaped, ca. 20 meters long, with the entrance 7.3 meters below the sea level. The interior is covered with fine sediment due to low hydrodynamism. Cold water is trapped inside the pit, and the temperature conditions are very stable throughout the year. Mixing of water is possible only during the cold part of the year, when temperatures of the sea inside and outside the pit become equal. There is practically no light penetration into the pit. Therefore, the ecological conditions inside are suitable for the development of deep-sea Hexactinellid sponge Oopsacas minuta. The living community there is biocenosis of dark caves in which 13 species of organisms were found. The short entrance section of the pit, with a little light getting through, is inhabited by a community of semi-dark caves, which, is not fully developed due to very small space. Outside the pit there is a community of infralittoral algae in which 73 species from 19 taxonomic groups were identified.
