Phytoplankton assemblages in Butoniga accumulation (Istria) were studied with the goal to describe the phytoplankton community, seasonal distribution, dominant species during 2007, and to find the changes through comparison of the data from previous research. The samples during 2007 were collected in May, June, July, August and October on 4 stations. During the investigation a total number of 36 phytoplankton species were found. The dominant group considering the number of species was Chlorophyta and dominant species in regard to number of cells was Cyclotella sp. (Bacillariophyceae). Because of the change of selective methodology (net phytoplankton: 2000 - 2005, and Utermöhl method: 2006 and 2007) there was established a taxonomical difference between 2006 and 2007 and other researched years. The characteristic community of phytoplankton in accumulation Butoniga is Cyclotella sp. - Dinobryon divergens - Dinobryon bavaricum - Ceratium hirundinella - Peridinium umbonatum. According to composition of phytoplankton community the quality of water in accumulation Butoniga is improving.
