Diatoms are usually the dominant component of periphyton/benthos and they reflect physical and chemical conditions of the water. Investigation was conducted seasonally during the period of fourteen years, from 1999 to 2012 in River Drava system of reservoirs (Varaždin, Čakovec and Dubrava), situated in the North part of Croatia. Samples were taken scraping the sunken trees, stones or pebbles. For each sample relative abundance was calculated. To explore changes inside diatom community based on collected data, several indexes were calculated: Trophic Diatom Index, Generic Diatom Index, Shannon–Wienner Margalefs, Simpsons, Pielou's index, saprobity index and species richness and it was determined if there are any statistical differences between years, sampling points and reservoirs. Results were compared with physical and chemical water parameters to determine relevance of diatoms as indicators for water quality. The results showed that there are significant changes in the composition and abundance of diatoms and also in water conditions. The total number of diatoms in average is lower each year and values of pH, nutrients and trophic level increases in studied aquatic habitats.
