Aquatic invertebrates have developed different strategies to adapt and to survive the dry season at intermittent springs. The population structure, density (ind. m-2) and reproduction of Synurella ambulans were studied at intermittent spring Krčić in Central Dalmatia to determine the strategy of adaptation. The sampling station represents eucrenal ecotone. Research was conducted once a month from April 2011 to June 2012 during the flow season, and with additional sample from April 2013. Samples were collected at three different types of substrates (microlithal, megalithal and moss) and basic physico - chemical characteristic of water were measured. The aim of the study was to determine reproductive strategy (operational sex ratio) and population dynamic in relation to the spring duration (time and length of the aquatic phase). The reproductive season of S. ambulans at intermittent spring Krčić was determined to be in groundwaters at the end of the dry season of the spring (September to November) because juveniles appeared in winter (December to January) soon after spring actiavation. The females appear to lay eggs in the groundwaters to produce one brood and than mostly die after release of the young. Only five ovigerous females were collected in January, March, April and May and it was not possible to determine fecundity.This population appears to have iteroparous (univoltine) type of life cycle. Males and females from the spring Krčić are among the smallest in Croatia and Europe, ranged from 2.24 to 5.25 mm and 2.38 to 7.35 mm, respectively.
