Influence of invasive alga Caulerpa taxifolia (Vahl) C. Agardh on structure and dynamic of meiofauna in phytal and sediment

Abstract

Alga Caulerpa taxifolia (Vahl) C. Agardh was introduced into the Mediterranean Sea in 1984. Since then its range rapidly increased and in Adraiatic Sea was first time recorded in 1994. at area of Starigrad Bay. While the negative effect of this alga on different macrobenthic organisms has been determined, its impact on meiofauna has rarely been investigated. This study examines the influence of C. taxifolia on the structure and dynamics of meiofauna in phytal and sediment in Starigrad Bay during autumn 2008. and spring 2009. In order to determine this impact a comparison between the meiofauna in the sediment without cover, meiofauna in the sediment overlaid with C. taxifolia, and meiofauna in the sediment under the cover of Posidonia oceanica (L.) Delile. was made. Epibionthic meiofauna on the two macrophytes has also been compared. Analysis of the meiofaunal structure in sediments showed that the densities ranged from 90,0±54,7 (in sediment under the cover of P. oceanica) to 1531,7±346,7 unit/10cm2 (in sediment without vegetation). A total of 11 taxa were identified. Statistical analysis showed that it is difficult to distinguish the impact of C. taxifolia from the effects of seagrass P. oceanica on the meiofauna in the sediments. Influence of macrophytes on the meiofauna in the sediments was found only in the spring period when the higher values of meiofauna densities in the sediments without the cover were determined. Comparing the composition of epibiontic meiofauna on two studied macrophytes statistically significant differences were found. Given their densities per 400 cm2 of habitat, lower epibiontic meiofauna density values were recorded in the habitat of C. taxifolia than in the habitat of indigenous seagrass P. oceanica. In the study, the order Harpacticoida was specially treated. A total of 17 meiofauna families were found in the sediments, 16 were determined on P. oceanica and 15 on C. taxifolia. Effect of C. taxifolia on the order Harpacticoida as a part of meiofauna in the sediment could not be established. Comparative analysis of the order Harpacticoida on two macrophytes also showed no differences that would indicate a negative impact of the invasive alga C. taxifolia on the structure of the order Harpacticoida.
