Abstract

This study gives karyological information on native European species Astacus astacus, A. leptodactylus and Austropotamobius torrentium (Decapoda, Astacidae). Astacus astacus has a diploid chromosome number 2n=176, species A. leptodactylus has 2n=180 and species Austropotamobius torrentium has 2n=174 chromosomes. Karyotype formula of A. astacus is n=88, 52m+35sm+1a, while for A. torrentium the formula is n=87, 78m+8sm+1t. Fluorescence banding with 4,6-diamidino-2-phenylindol (DAPI) has shown long heterochromatic blocks in centromeric regions of all chromosomes in Astacus species, and on some chromosomes in species A. torrentium. Interstitial blocks are found in some chromosomes of all three species. Meiotic pairing of chromosomes is regular in A. astacus i A. leptodactylus, and most of bivalents are in ring and dumbbell form. Furthermore, fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) reveals two 45S rDNA loci in both A. astacus and A. leptodactylus. An additional 45S rDNA signal was found in A. leptodactylus.
