Abstract

Reactive oxygen species play a role in a normal and abnormal dermal physiology. Scientific studies have shown that reactive oxygen species play a major role in the pathogenesis of psoriasis and that compounds inducing effective antioxidant responses are very effective in the treatment of various skin diseases, including psoriasis and other disorders where oxidative stress plays a pathogenic role. Chrysin is a flavonoid that proved to be very effective in antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activity. Therefore in these experiments we determined the effect of chrysin on mouse psoriatic skin condition caused by di-n-propyl disulfide. We used different methods such as the determination of the number of cells in the abdominal cavity, micronucleus test, comet assay, thermographic imaging, determination of the functional activity of macrophages in the peritoneal fluid, histopathological analysis of changes in the skin of experimental animals, and the determination of parameters of oxidative stress. Our research has shown that anti-inflammatory effects of chrysin could be used in the prevention and treatment of psoriatic skin lesions without genotoxic effects.
