Abstract

Depression is a serious disease which takes toll on more people every day. Besides the impact on the immune system, depression contributes to the pathophysiology of the disease. Antidepressants act primarily on the level of the uptake of the neurotransmitter, but also affect the cells of the immune system, what needs more detailed research. The brain recognizes cytokines as a sign of the infection or injury, and it reacts appropriately to that, but in case of imbalance of the neuroendocrine and immune system it may induce changes in behavior and the development of depression.
