Abstract

Adriatic carbonate platform sediments of the Early Jurassic age (Pliensbach) cropping out in area of Gorski kotar (Gornje Jelenje) and South Velebit (Mali Alan) have been investigated in order to determine their depositional environment and to confirm their age according to guide fossils (mainly benthic foraminifera). Detail microfacies analysis allowed the recognition of several microfacies types, cyclic stacking pattern and microfossils content. The carbonates were deposited mainly in a restricted inner platform environment (lagoon-peritidal domain) and are aranged into small-scale shallowing-upward cycles. Occasional palaeosol horizons containing typical pedogenic features, palaeospeleothems and palaeocaliche formations on the top of the peritidal cycles impies repeated sea-level fluctuations and periodic emersion episodes.
