Abstract

Animals have always attracted human attention. Special attention today is given to their behavior and abilities. Many cognitive abilities once considered unique to humans, are found among animals. Those abilities include learning and remembering, self-awareness, cooperation and planning. Scientists are designing different tests to examine animal intelligence and undoubtedly the smartest ones proved to be birds, mammals and surprisingly cephalopods. Natural selection has an important role in evolution of cognitive abilities. It works through adaptations to the habitat what has resulted with great variations within and between species during history. Considering large differences among members of animal kingdom, it is hard to draw a line between cognitive behavior and instinctive action, and there is always a risk of anthropomorphism.
