Abstract

Corals are exclusively marine animals with radial symmetry which differ from other Cnidaria because they are mostly sessile or slightly moving polipi. Coral reefs are formed by mineral deposits of billions of colonial coralpolyps. They are one of the most productive and diverse communities in the world. This paper presents the general characteristics of corals and coral reefs, with an emphasis on vulnerability and protection of coral reefs. The reason is that corals have a more important role in the world, such as shelter and food for many species and thus maintain a large marine diversity.
