Abstract

Branchiobdellidans are ectosymbiotic annelids that are primarily associated with freshwater crayfish from the Astacidae and Cambaridae families. They have a Holartic distribution. Six species of branchiobdellidans have been reported in Croatia, all of them belong to the Branchiobdella genus. Three native Croatian species of crayfish have been reported as hosts: Austropotamobius pallipes, Austropotamobius torrentium and Astacus astacus. The objectives of this research were to morphologically identify the branchiobdellidan species living on crayfish from the Austropotamobius genus and to infer a molecular phylogeny between them. The examination of crayfish from 74 water body sites revealed the existence of five branchiobdellidan species: Branchiobdella astaci, Branchiobdella hexodonta, Branchiobdella parasita, Branchiobdella pentodonta and Branchiobdella italica. Branchiobdellidan presence has been identified in fifty new locations in Croatia. Nucleotide sequences of two mitochondrial genes (COI and 16S rRNA) have been used to estimate phylogenetic relationships between the species from the genus Branchiobdella. The results of the phylogenetic analyses, based on the examination of the constructed phylogenetic trees and values of p-distances, indicate that the same process that led to the speciation of the genus Austropotamobius in Croatia, also caused the speciation of studied branchiobdellidans.
