Abstract

The reproductive traits of Gammarus balcanicus were examined from August 2004 to September 2005 at two study sites located in the upper and lower reaches of the Cetina River influenced by different water temperature. The highest population density of the species was recorded in fital of the eucrenal zone of the Cetina River, with the water temperature below 10°C. The obtained results pointed out a strong relationship between longitudinal microhabitat distribution and population density, as well as density of ovigerous females and water temperature. The ovigerous females were recorded year-round in the upper and lower reaches of the Cetina River, with the high density during the summer (August) and winter (February) in the upper and lower reaches of the River, respectivelly. The populations studied in this work appears to be multivoltine with the optimal reproductive conditions and highest number of ovigerous female in fital of the eucrenal zone in the upper reaches of the River. The species was represented with the low population density at the lower reaches of the River with high oscilations of water temperature as a consequence of dam influences. Field observations showed that a temperature of 20°C or higher at the lower reaches of the River has a negativ effect on reproduction and growth of the species.
