Polyphenols are the most studied group of secondary metabolites due to their biological activity and positive effects on human health. Antioxidant effects of polyphenols are associated with their free radical scavenging activity, metal chelating ability and inhibition of enzymes involved in the oxidative processes. In this work the contents of phenolics and flavonoids and antioxidant activity of aqueous and ethanol extracts of several plant species traditionally used worldwide for medicinal purposes: wild mint (Mentha longifolia L.), nettle (Urtica dioica L.), St. John's wort (Hypericum perforatum L.), burdock (Arctium lappa L.) and Italian thistle (Carduus pycnocephalus L.) were investigated. Plants were harvested at two different altitudes (850 and 1185) in the area of Blidinje (Bosnia and Herzegovina). Obtained results showed that investigated plant species are relatively rich in polyphenolic substances. It was also found that, compared to water, ethanol is preferred solvent for the extraction of polyphenols as the ethanolic extracts of the studied plant species showed higher levels of phytochemicals and higher antioxidant activity than their aqueous extracts. The influence of altitude on the antioxidant activity was visible in the water extracts of the studied plant species. A positive correlation was determined between the content of polyphenolic compounds and antioxidant capacity measured by DPPH, ABTS and FRAP methods.
