Abstract

Sea turtles are the only reptiles that inhabit the Adriatic Sea. Most of them have a global distribution but in the Adriatic live only three species: the loggerhead sea turtle (Caretta caretta), green sea turtle (Chelonia mydas) and leatherback sea turtle (Dermochelys coriacea). In this essay has been presented their characteristics as members of the order Chelonia, as well as analysis of each species individually. Sea turtles are classified by the IUCN as endangered species because of the numerous negative anthropogenic influence, so are strictly protected by Croatian regulations and international conventions.
