Abstract

Habitat degradation on Madagascar, as a consequence of anthropogenic disturbance and frequent logging, presents a serious threat to all the animals on the habitat and causes changes in physiology and behaviour of species, but could also influence on population level. The most threatened group of mammals are lemurs and the most threatened habitat on Madagascar is the rainforests. Species Propithecus edwardsi is a threatened, endemic species of lemur and it is distributed only in the eastern rainforest of Madagascar. In this study the effect of habitat degradation on the behaviour and feeding of P. edwardsi was examined. Responses of individuals from the degraded and non-degraded area were compared. Changes in the quantity of resting, feeding and plant parts consumation were recorded. Individuals from the degraded area spent more time on feeding. It is a compensation to the lack of energy caused by low nutritive value of the consumed food. Individuals from the non-degraded area spent more time on resting. Results from this study show that habitat degradation does not affect behaviour of P. edwardsi directly, but leads to a change in vegetation composition and food resource availability what causes the change in feeding and necessary energy intake which then leads to adaptations in behaviour.
