Benthic macroinvertebrates are organisms visible to the naked eye that live on bottom of aquatic systems. They play important role in monitoring the quality of the environment and are used as indicators. The community is very sensitive on environmental conditions and adverse conditions can lead to the complete disappearance. Subsequently, the process of recolonization takes place. Recolonization is usually swift, following natural physical disorders but also following human induced short term stress events. Probably the most important mechanism of recolonization in streams is drift. Drift includes passive and active downstream migrations and allows organisms to inhabit more advantageous habitats by reducing competition. During the summer, recovery after disturbance on area of 1 m2 lasts for 8 days, and winter can last up to 71 days. Artificial substrates were introduced in aquatic research because conventional sampling methods for macroinvertebrates were not able to fulfill all the research needs. Artificial substrates are part of field equipment that mimic the conditions of the aquatic environment in which they are located. Although artificial substrates are relatively new way of sampling, their significant advantages ensured their application. Still, there are some issues (shortcomings) but with further research, many problems will be reduced to a negligible level and the results will become more accurate.
