Abstract

Lack of concern about the faith of seagrasses can be explained by the deficit of their commercial value (they can be partially used as food for people or animals and as fertilizer), but their real value is primarily indirect. Protection of seagrass meadows is essential because of their ability to manage impact of waves and sea currents on the shore, stabilization of the sea beds, sedimentation i consolidation of sedimentation trough which it locally purifies water, as habitats of many commercially important animal species, and as general centres of biodiversity. With their loss we would lose a great deal of important hatcheries and nurseries for many different species which would lead to lesser amount of their renewal. Seagrass meadows are very sensitive because of their slow growth and regeneration rates. On the loss of their habitats very big influence has human activity in the form of trawling, mariculture, sea shore construction, urban and industrial wastewaters, as well as introduction of invasive species which all cause enhanced eutrophication, burial of the plants with sediment, and physical and physiological stress.
