Abstract

In this study more recent data on the distribution of vipers in the western and central parts of the Balkan Peninsula are presented, with special emphasis on the V. ursinii. Here we answer how often do syntopic relationships occur and what are the characteristics that determine the level of ecological niche overlap among species. Through this study all published and unpublished data from Croatia, B&H, Montenegro, Serbia and Macedonia is summarized and presented. Based on this data and field collected data (presence-only) we create predictive models for V. ursinii and V. berus and compare them with each other and with the model for V. ammodytes. By overlaying the models we predicted the zones with high potential for finding syntopic populations. As part of the study we carried out a field research on population ecology of V. ursinii and V. ammodytes in the NP Paklenica. The aim was to gather as much information on the population ecology, behaviour and microhabitat preferences of V. ammodytes and V. ursinii that live in syntopic relationship in this area. Recent publications have dealt with phylogeographic relations in V. berus and V. ammodytes, but however, the V. ursinii phylogeography was never made. Here we discuss on exact taxonomic position of V. ursinii populations from Croatia and in the western and central part of the Balkan Peninsula, in relation to other species of the V. ursinii complex.
