Sponges are the simplest multicellular animals. Asexual reproduction and great regeneration ability facilitate their cultivation. They feed by filtering the particles suspended in the sea, so this is an activity that does not pollute the environment but can be used for reducing the negative environmental impact of other aquaculture activities, such as fish farming in cages. Natural populations of sponges in Mediterranean sea are threatened by improper fishing so their breeding is the best solution for the restoration and survival of natural populations of sponges. They are used since old times and lately have been more interesting due to production of the metabolites that can be used for different purposes. However, many more trials and experiments are required to improve methods for their cultivation.
