Abstract

The yellow gorgonian, Eunicella cavolini, is one of the most common species of Mediterranean colonial corals, which bestows it among the more important contributors to structure and complexity of hard-bottom benthic communities. The goal of this study was to determine spatial and temporal variability in gonadal output of Eastern Adriatic yellow gorgonian populations. Sampling was conducted at three locations in years 2009 and 2014. The average female fecundity (number of fertile gonads per polyp) ranged from 1.55 to 2.07 (max 5), the majority of female gonads had a diameter of 500-600 μm (max 725) and the average gonadal volume per polyp was between 139.45 x 106 μm3 and 200.05 x 106 μm3. No significant variation was detected in female fecundity, diameter or gonadal volume. The average male fecundity ranged from 2.98 to 7.82 (max 20), the majority of male gonads had a diameter of 300-500 μm (max 650) and the average gonadal volume was between 15.62 x 106 μm3 and 37.09 x 106 μm3. Significant temporal intrapopulational variation was documented in male fecundity, as well as interpopulational gonadal diameter differences, while there were no significant interpopulational variations in gonadal volume. The insignificant spatial and temporal variability of female reproductive traits, as reported in this study, suggests their usage as potential indicators of negative impacts on the reproduction of the yellow gorgonian.
